Do It Yourself Room Divider
For those do it yourselfers, you can make your own room divider - if you consider yourself to be handy with tools, then you might be able to save a bundle while making a nice custom accent piece for your room.
There are basically 3 styles of room dividers – one is like a folding screen with 4 or more panels. Another is just one panel that has feet that hold it upright and the 3rd is a hanging fabric or bead panel suspended from the ceiling like an indoor curtain.
A folding screen room divider has 3 or more panels. Before you start to do this yourself, you need to decide how many you want to have. When you stand this type of divider up and set the panels at angles it will stay up on it’s own. When building this kind of divider, first make frames for each of the panels out of wood. You can put anything you want inside the frames. Painted canvas, glass, metal, wood – be creative and pick something that really is unique to you. Put all the panels together using hinges so that the can fold.
Building the one panel divider is pretty easy. Simply make a frame like above except larger since there will only be 1 panel. Then add on some feet. Make sure you size the feet properly so that the panel doesn’t fall over!
To build the fabric or bead room divider panel, you’ll need to put some sort of track in the ceiling or at least some hooks to hang the panel from. Decide how wide you want the panel to be and make the track or hooks that length. If you want to slide the curtain open and closed, a track will be better than hooks, but if you do put up hooks, you can always use it like a curtain and get a fancy tie back to hold it back. Once you have decided on the width, simply sew a piece of fabric that is a bit wider and goes from floor to ceiling – remember that the fabric must look nice on both sides so you may have to double face it. Also, take care to make nice hems all around. If you want it to be a beaded curtain, and you can’t find one to size, you can buy the beads and string them yourself.
