Making A Room Divider
Making a room divider is a simple matter but you’ll need to know some basic carpentry in order to tackle this job.
When making a room divider, you will have to pick from 3 basic styles – one is like a folding screen with 4 or more panels. Another is just one panel that has feet that hold it upright and the 3rd is a hanging fabric or bead panel suspended from the ceiling like an indoor curtain.
If you are making a room divider that is the folding screen style you need to choose the number of panels you want. Typically they have 3, but you can use 4 or more if desired. When you stand this type of divider up and set the panels at angles it will stay up on it’s own. When building this kind of divider, first make frames for each of the panels out of wood. You can put anything you want inside the frames. Painted canvas, glass, metal, wood – be creative and pick something that really is unique to you. Put all the panels together using hinges so that the can fold.
Making the one panel version of a room divider is easy since it is only 1 panel! Just make a frame to the size you want and put anything decorative in the middle – antique wrought iron, fabric, stained glass – whatever you want. Then add some feet so that it can stand up. Make sure the feet are wide enough to hold the piece steady.
Making a room divider that is a fabric or beaded panel is a bit harder as it needs to be suspended from the ceiling. Use hooks or a track. The curtain can slide back on the track or if you use hooks, you can tie it back with a fancy tie back just like a window curtain.
